Lock your vault with a pattern that makes its own key

Draw a pattern on a 5 × 5 grid and Vaulteo turns it into a 256-bit key on your iPhone. See how the key gets made, where it lives, and what a stranger needs to break it.

Short answer

Your pattern runs through 600,000 rounds of PBKDF2-SHA512 on your iPhone and becomes the key that unwraps your vault. Vaulteo seals every file with AES-256-GCM and never stores the pattern or the key anywhere else.

You draw a shape. Vaulteo turns that shape into a key, and the key seals everything you put inside. Nothing else in the app can open your files: no Face ID shortcut, no master password, no copy on a server.

Watch your pattern become a key

When you lift your finger, Vaulteo takes the dots you connected, in order, and runs them through PBKDF2-SHA512 for 600,000 rounds. Your iPhone mixes in a random salt that it keeps in its own Keychain, marked for this device only. Out comes a 256-bit key.

That key never touches the disk. Vaulteo uses it to unwrap the vault's own random key, then holds it in memory while the vault stays open. Leave the app and the key disappears.

Want to feel it? Draw a pattern in the live demo on the home page. Your browser runs the same 600,000 rounds and tells you how long they took.

Seal every file on its own

Vaulteo seals each page, photo, thumbnail, index and chat with AES-256-GCM. GCM also checks every file for tampering, so a changed byte fails to open instead of opening wrong.

What Vaulteo sealsHow
Scanned pages and PDFsAES-256-GCM, one sealed file per page
PhotosAES-256-GCM, sealed whole
VideosAES-256-GCM in 1 MB pieces, played without unsealing to disk
Your library, folders and to-dosAES-256-GCM
Your AI chatsAES-256-GCM

On top of that, iOS adds its own Complete Protection class to each file, so the phone keeps them sealed whenever it's locked too.

Connect the dots you jump over

Drag straight from one corner to the other and Vaulteo adds every dot on the line, like Android does. Fast patterns still come out exactly as you meant them.

Pick a pattern a shoulder can't read

  1. Use 7 dots or more.
  2. Cross your own line at least once.
  3. Skip the letters of your name and the obvious L, Z and box shapes.
  4. Draw it with your hand turned away from people near you.

Know what the pattern can't do

Your pattern protects your files inside Vaulteo. It doesn't hide the app from your home screen, and it can't protect a photo you leave in Photos. Move the original in, then delete it from Recently Deleted as well.

Forget the pattern and only your 9 recovery words open the vault again, on the same iPhone. Write them on paper the day you create the vault.

Questions you ask about this

Why a pattern and not a PIN?
A 5 × 5 grid gives you far more possible patterns than a 4 or 6 digit PIN, and your thumb remembers a shape faster than a number. Draw 8 dots or more and the count of possible patterns runs into the billions.
Can Face ID open my vault?
No. Face ID can't produce your key, because the key comes from the pattern itself. Draw the pattern every time you open a vault.
What stops someone from trying every pattern?
Each try costs 600,000 rounds of PBKDF2-SHA512, about half a second on an iPhone. A wrong pattern also opens a new, empty vault, so the person guessing never learns they got it wrong.
